We are VERY particular about the kind of books we read and own in our family. SO much of what is written for children currently is complete twaddle and the illustrations look as if no human hand had anything to do with them. As a result, we tend to gravitate toward books written between the 1920s (like original Winnie the Pooh stories by AA Milne - NOT Disney) through the late 1970s. Most of the ones we own, like this one, were written in the 1960s and 70s - so many wonderful nature-focused books came out at that time. We live on a farm in the woods and spend most of our lives outdoors so the subject matter of this book really appeals to my 4 and almost 5 year old boys. I spent much more than I normally do on this book (about $35) as I wanted the original version not the updated one from the 90s (in which someone made a horrible mistake and replaced the lovely original drawings with absolutely horrible computer-generated junk.) Worth every penny. We read it constantly. One of those wonderful books with universal appeal and timeless quality. Invest in the original version and you will keep it for life.

We Were Tired of Living in a House Liesel Moak Skorpen Joe Cepeda 9780399230165 Books Reviews

When we were nine, my twin sister and I had a thing for rhymes, tongue twisters and the like. Together we would read and recite lots of silly sayings until our mouths were dry, or until my mother couldn't take anymore. One of our all time favorite books was "We Were Tired of Living in a House", which to my delight has recently been brought back to life. This book holds alot of memories for us, even more precious since our copy disappeared long ago. Now at the ripe old age of thirty-two, we find ourselves browsing through stacks of children's books, searching for some title that might bring to our kids the same magic; the magic that makes a nine year old kid carry that book with them wherever they go.
The story begins with a group of kids who decide home is no longer a satisfactory place to be. They pack up some key belongings and begin on a journey that finds them setting up camp in various unusual places, including a tree, a cave, and the beach. At each stop they discover that their new home has unique features as well as unexpected drawbacks, and they acquire souvenirs to add to their list of key belongings before moving on. As the list approaches the limits of syllables-per-breath for a child, they come to the conclusion that home is the only suitable place to live, and return with all of the souvenirs in tow.
The story has rhyme and rhythm, plenty of whimsy, a happy ending and even an age-appropriate moral. The illustrations are also memorable. Buy two - and keep a spare for when they get older.
I have been thinking about this book for quite some time. I figured it was a lost cause since I was a child when I first read it. The drawings stuck with me into adulthood, so expressive! I was ecstatic to find a copy at a reasonable price and in better condition used than I expected. I am very pleased with how quickly this shipped and the honesty of the seller for reporting minor damage, which in no way affected the readability of the work. I'm completely satisfied!
I am so excited to have this book! My children loved it. My grandchildren can enjoy it at Grandma's house. One daughter took the one she grew up with.
I had to order this book because the book I had read to my kids as they were growing up was my brothers copy. He hadn't needed it until recently when he got married at 49 and became an instant grandfather. I reluctantly gave it to him on his 50th birthday. I couldn't bare to not have it for my grandchildren as it was my children's favorite, so I spent the extra money to acquire a copy. I love the illustrations and poetry- it is the only version I would buy- I couldn't believe how they had destroyed its' beauty with the newer publication. It is a classic not to be messed with- like the old movies!
This was a favorite of one of children, and it was great to recapture the experience with her now close to 40 years later. The art work by the late Doris Burn in this edition is superb. A newer version of the book with different artwork now available lacks the same charm. I only mark it down to 4 stars because the binding is loose, as was described by the seller, so no complaint about that. Maybe it is a tribute to the book that "pristine" copies are so rare.
Oh my. A book I read to my kids over 30 years ago. I found it again for my new grandson. I don't even know why it is so fabulous. I read it out loud to myself. I love the illustrations.....but especially the "frog who was a particular friend"". He has become an icon in our family. I loved used and loved books. I see no reason to buy new books, or read them on a screen. turn the pages, smell the paper. feel he binding. Absolutely nothing like it.
This book was a favorite of my sons when they were little and I received as much enjoyment reading it to them. For us, the possibilities of living in different places was fun and exciting. It reinforced the fact that families thrived no matter where they were. The joy of living in a tree and watching the seasons change, or living at the beach and noticing the beauty which normally goes undetected in this busy world was a great lesson in life. My sons are grown men now but take the time to savor nature and all it affords them. In fact, they live in tents during the summer and love it. I highly recommend this book for all. I'm excited to see it back in print. I have searched for years for a copy.
