The 17th State A Tale of Suspense Chuck Driskell 9781542549448 Books

This was Chuck Driskell's 10th book, of which 5 others also did not involve Gage Hartline as chief protagonist. Among those other 5 that did not "star" Mssr. Hartline, this book was a departure from those as well. In a word, this writing was more a frolic of Chuck's writing skills, with which I think he would agree. He saw the writing more in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock. I saw it more in the vein of "The perils of Pauline", in the name of our protagonist Roman Littlepage.
I don't re tell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, the story line had Roman darting around the Island of Majorca fleeing from one antagonist after another. What kept me involved, and why I gave it 5 stars, was not so much the "depth" of the read ("frolic" as I say), but I wanted to keep on reading just to find out what was going to happen next! This book had excellent reader memory in that I did not have to re read pages to recall what was going on after I came back to it after putting it down. That, for me, demonstrated good plot development, because the story stayed with me. Character development of the chief protagonist, Roman, was nothing short of excellent. His moods and actions portrayed him as not only a man on the run but one also not wanting to escape his responsibilities to "the goddess" and his family (yeah you will have to read it yourself to learn more about that).
As I say, I considered this book different in style from any of the other non-Hartline books, and think that was just what Driskell intended. You could wonder if this was the same writer that gave us for example "Doppelganger" or "Demon's Bluff" (I've read them all), but "The 17th State" was just as well written and engaging.
It might be said that this book was written tongue in cheek, but I read it as the writer broadening his writing chops. Gage Hartline will always be my favorite character, but this book was just as fun a read as well.

The 17th State A Tale of Suspense Chuck Driskell 9781542549448 Books Reviews

I had a great time reading The 17th State. Being a bit difficult to please, this was a no brainer for me. Interesting hero & heroine which ended up in a way that totally caught me by surprise. On the negative? I liked Chuck's work I now feel compelled to read more of it. Bummer, huh? 😂
Roman, the protagonist is a regular guy that gets caught up in an action/thriller/spy movie. Twice as fun to read because it could have happened to any of us. His only concern is the "Goddess", but instead of does he get the girl it becomes will he ever get out of this alive! Definitely going to look for all the rest by this author!
Chuck Driskell has changed his genre but his ability to spin a tail has not changed. In his latest he sets the hook early and it's hard to put it down. This tale is well written, plausible (for the most part) and captivating. Driskell manages to sneak in a few parachute jumper tidbits so you don't forget where he's come from. This book is a good way to spend a rainy day. You won't be disappointed.
I've read a number of Chuck's books and found this one to be as enthralling as any of them. It started out a little confusing, but didn't take long for me to get on track and keep turning pages. I couldn't put it down once as the story unfolded...as a matter of fact, my wife was a little miffed that I wanted to finish reading it during the Braves game that she thought I was watching. I guess she didn't like the "what just happened"'s as the game progressed; but I successfully tuned both out in order to follow the suspenseful and surprising ending. Chuck obviously did a lot of research on some of the technical details, as he always does, which makes it very interesting. Great job! (I read Ken Follett's Key to Rebecca right before reading this, and found this to be more enjoyable.)
Another good yarn from Chuck Driskell. This one takes place on the island of Mallorca and with his usual skill, Driskell transports us there through vivid descriptions of the place. Roman Littlepage is a typical everyman--and an atypical action hero--but that's what he becomes as he is ensnared in a murder plot. With the help of fellow tourist Eva, Roman works to give the bad guys the slip and survive his vacation in one piece. Lots of action and a satisfying ending!
The author is a gifted story teller. This book differs from his prior offerings in that the protagonist is no highly trained mercenary, but rather a regular guy caught up in a literal "do or die" situation. The plot reveals itself over time and the reader learns each revelation along with the characters, as questions are answered and the chaos begins to make sense. Driskell entertainingly weaves humor, intrigue, romance and mayhem into a engaging and thoroughly enjoyable read. And get ready to pack your bags, because after you read his vivid and enticing descriptions of the island of Mallorca, you will want to leave on the next plane... just be careful where you use the restroom.
This is the best Driskell novel to date, in my opinion. I could not put it down! Driskell takes the reader on a thrill a minute roller coaster ride set against the backdrop of the gorgeous European playground in Mallorca, Spain.

Roman Littlepage is an everyman - still smarting from his recent divorce, worried about his children and constantly wondering if he has what it takes inside to become the man he wishes to be. When he heads to Mallorca with old Army buddies Mike and Mitch to blow off some steam, it seems as though it might be just what the doctor ordered to cure what ails him. And then he sees her - maybe the most beautiful blonde he's ever seen. The Goddess. As his buddies head home, Roman stays on in Mallorca, determined to connect with his dream girl.

Just when his eyes meet those of the Goddess, it happens. In the best tradition of the great Albert Hitchcock, Roman, an ordinary man, sees something terrible that he should not have seen and he is instantly transformed into seemingly helpless prey for stone cold killers. Neither he nor anyone he loves will ever be safe unless Roman can summon the courage to become a hero in the face of overwhelming odds.

This book is, to put it simply, a BLAST! Start reading and see if you can put it down! I dare you!
