4.5 stars. Excellent romantic suspense tale about a war photographer with PTSD and a man she's not sure she can trust. Journalist Julie Larson goes for a jog in Central Park and stumbles into the middle of a murder in progress. When one of the men involved takes her hostage, she finds that the man is actually trying to protect her from the other man involved in the murder. He lets her go, but shows up later at her apartment badly injured and in need of help. She reluctantly assists him, and as they get to know each other, she learns that he is not exactly what he seems... nor is the handsome police detective who keeps nosing around.

When the murderer from the park makes another attempt on her, and she is saved by the intervention of her mystery man, Julie learns that she's stumbled into a vast conspiracy, and her only hope to survive it is to trust a man who refuses to tell her the full truth for fear of what will happen to her if she knows.

I really enjoyed this book. Tight writing, twists and turns galore, characters who were well-fleshed out and real, a mystery to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. I don't normally like romance novels written in the first person because I like to get inside the heads of both leads, but the structure of the story worked with us only being in Julie's head. I think I might have loved the book even more if I'd been inside the hero's head as well, but I enjoyed it as it was. The action scenes were taut and carried a real punch, and I felt every blow the characters took.

The story did get a touch convoluted at times, and I had a hard time remembering some of the peripheral characters, so I had to back-track occasionally to figure out who they were when they were mentioned (Houston is one example). And the climax had the talking villain willing to explain all because "ha ha you're going to die anyway" and I would have liked something a little different there. But that's a minor drawback. I also didn't quite buy the reason that Julie was targeted by this conspiracy in the first place; it seemed like a bit of a stretch. However, the villains in the story were creepy and I was quite happy to see all of them get what they deserved.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely be picking up the rest of this series to see how it evolves.

Wayyyyy to long. At one point I thought I was over 1/2 way into it only to see I was at 30%. Loved the hero, Sam, however Jules couldn't make up her mind and after the 5th time of her pushing the hero away it got old quick. The book would have been more enjoyable if the content was edited down. Too many unnecessary details made it about 75-100 pages too long. Appreciated there were no real glaring editing grammar issues that distracted me from the story.
I was very equally torn between being frustrated with parts of this book and absolutely loving it at other times.

The parts I liked
The characters are very well rounded, flushed out and believable. Through out the book you get to feel as confused as the main character Julie does about both Sam and Stone. You can see, smell, and hear these characters as if they were living right in your own town. Even Max who is only a dog has a wonderful character all unto himself and you love him.

The plot is extremely intriguing and you are constantly wondering what Julie has done to create this whirl wind of chaos to rain down on her. It definitely keeps you going until the end.

The sex scenes are amazing! Fairchild gives you just the right amount of give and take, building you up to the perfect climax, and then does not disappoint! Steamy hot love scenes, leave you wanting more and keeps you reading for the anticipation of it.

The parts I didn't like
There were three distinct things that prevented me from giving this book a full 4 or 5 stars.

One The internal conflict for Julie seemed unclear and kept changing. At the end of the book it became apparent what the writer was trying to do, but it was a bit unorganized through out the story. It left me feeling confused at to what I was supposed to be rooting for, in reference to her growth arch and didn't understand this until the very end. It seemed to change between trying to get over her PTSD, or trying to choose between Sam and Stone, letting go of her fiance, etc.. She seemed confused and lost about too many things. I can see at the end that all these things were supposed to be related but it didn't carry well until the final chapters.

Two For a book that is listed under the suspense romance genre, I felt the scenes went far too long. They needed to be shortened by half in nearly almost every situation that they kept going on and on. There was dialog that was meant to deliver a point, and when the point was already made, the scene just kept going and it caused the story to drag.

Three Honestly as a reader, I do not like gratuitous rape scenes that seem unnecessary to the plot. There is a rather detailed sexual assault scene at the end of the story. At this point in the story we already know the bad guy is bad, so I had an incredibly hard time understanding why this scene was included. I felt it was unnecessary to the furthering of the plot. As it is, you already feel really sorry for the person this happens to, and for more tragedy to occur seemed completely irrelevant to the plot, and was just disturbing. If the the writer had a reason, it was very unclear to me.

Overall I really enjoyed the book. The climax at the end was well worth reading to the end and pushing through the slower long drawn out parts.
