The Darkslayer Wrath of the Royals Book 1 of 6 A Sword and Sorcery Series eBook Craig Halloran

Venir the Warrior and Melegal the thief are a couple of con artists in the City of Bone, suckering fools in bars in feats of strength and cunning. Deciding to hit a high class establishment, Venir embarrasses a nobles son in a city where nobles have absolute power. After a night of debauchery, he returns to the same bar looking for another round, where he is promply drugged and wakes up in local dungeon. Well, this is not something new. He manages to escape, and leaves the city with Melegal. On the way out, the noble he embarrasssed ambushes them, and Verin ends his threat permanently, or so he thinks, because its amazing what an evil Wizard can do. Outside the city, on a new series of adventures, Verin and Milegal turn to Verin's other task, which is to be a sacred warrior against the evil Underling race, the sorcerous scourge of the rest of the races. The Goddess of his world created him as the check to their power, to try and keep good and evil balanced, so he has magical armor, battleax and enhanced abilities to fight them. While not invincible as The Darkslayer, he is very hard to kill. With help from some friends they meets along the way, Verin and Milegal face off against a renewed Underling threat like none they have ever seen. I cant tell you how it turns out without spoiling it, but it concludes in an epic battle unlike anything I'd ever read before. The world is deep. in fact , the cosmology is pretty deep, with the actual nuts and bolts of the universe and its creation being shown with some scenes of the world's goddess. Very unique approach. The characters are a lot of fun, with Verin and Melegal playing well off each other, and the supporting characters add some richness to the dialoge and plot. The villains are first class, and are fun, in an evil sort of way, in their own right. This book has been compared to a lot of other writers work, but it is only a superficial resemblance. Other than having two rogues as protagonists, it is its own unique work, more reminiscent of a quality D&D campaign than a knockoff of Fritz Leiber. Any fan of Fantasy should be able to really enjoy this book.

The Darkslayer Wrath of the Royals Book 1 of 6 A Sword and Sorcery Series eBook Craig Halloran Reviews

I first purchased this book back in 2013 and didn't get more than a few pages in before I gave up. Seeing that there are 15 more books now in the series, I thought I should give it another try. This book is extremely hard to get in to. It was even painful at times. Overly descriptive scenery that often contradicted itself in the same paragraph drove me nuts. I found myself skipping over these parts.

I have finally made it to the end, and I will buy the next book. I have read other books by Mr Halloran that were great. I am not sure if this is one of his earlier works and that is why the writing is so bad. But I am hoping that this series gets better as it goes, because it does have potential.
I found this book quite captivating and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely less predictable than the Dragon books and of course much darker in tone. The Royals are easy to dislike as are those that work for them. The two Underling brothers are not so easy. Yes, they are evil but their relation to each other is actually quite touching. At moments I find myself liking them or even siding with them against their Underling superiors.
All in all it is a very good read but definitely adult in flavour. Well written and has few if any errors in spelling or composition. I think only one sentence caught my attention. Compared to most new self published e-books, the quality is excellent! Highly recommend the series! I am currently reading the 2nd book in the series which I received free in exchange for an honest review. So far that book is easily as good as the first and it has me on the edge of my seat. I can say that I will be getting the next book for sure and am fairly certain I will read the entire series. I will try to give a review of that book soon as I am done. These are my first reviews on so flying half blind.
It is a decent sword and sorcery book. The author spends a lot of time setting up the world, the plot outline, the character types, and unfortunately not as much on the depth of characters themselves. I slogged through this book, with the occasional good parts keeping my interest enough to keep reading. Much of his setup was confusing and I almost gave up because of that. I am now halfway through book 3 and the book is much more interesting as everything now is fitting together and making sense. It is a much more complex universe than most S and S books. The characters, which have increased in number, are much more understandable with at least 5 sub plots going on all at the same time. I suspect the author has learned a great deal since book one as his general writing style has improved by book 3. My advice is to hang in there when reading the first book as it does feed well into the succeeding books.
Ok I have mixed emotions about this book. The characters are interesting but shallow. The author has a tendency to try and over describe things. "Instead, they left their grubby fingers free to fight for miniscule grips as they crossed over jutting hillsides and down into plunging gorges." To me grubby is just wrong, miniscule is unnecessary, jutting hillsides and plunging gorges? It detracts from a sometimes good story. It's almost like he's trying to impress us too much. I will probably not read any further in the series unless someone can assure me it gets better. Also using the word "Afro" to describe an orcs hair? Silly
