Wilhelmina Grimm (publicly known as Mina Grime), is the great-great-lots more greats granddaughter of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, better known as the brother's Grimm. Generally known, the brother's were great fairy-tale writers that traveled the world and wrote incredible stories. Less well-known is the fact that they didn't actually write these stories, they were a part of them. Each story being a quest that they completed for the fae (fairies) and the ruling King and Queen of the fae, known as the Fates. Wilhelm and Jacob made a deal with the fae to stop the evil fae from coming to the human plane and feasting on innocent humans. The Fates agreed, so long as Wilhelm and Jacob could complete all of the fairy tale story quests. The brothers agreed to the terms, unaware that if they failed to finish all of the quests then the agreement would fall to their children. Now, generations later, Mina has been bestowed the family "curse" to complete the fairy tale quests that the brother's originally agreed to. Another unfortunate side-effect of the deal that the Fates didn't exactly explain was that whenever one of the Grimms died, all of the quests started over. All of the quests had to be completed and fulfilled by one individual.
Generations of Grimms have fought against the fae, trying to overcome the story, complete the tales, and ride the human world (and their family) of the fae curse. Mina, sheltered and unaware of the family curse due to her mother's constant vigilance, moving, and even going as far as changing their family name and cutting ties with all known relations, has now stumbled into her family curse. The storybook fairy tales and the family curse have finally caught up with her and her family and Mina realizes if her family is ever going to be free or able to live their lives (and further more if she wants to protect her 8 year-old mute brother from inheriting the curse in her place) she has to fulfill the family curse and somehow beat what not other Grimm has been able to before.
A well-written first book to a series with a twist on the traditional fairy tales from the Grimm brothers. The main character, descendant of the brothers, sees how things can change over the years and just like when playing telephone with friends, things can get lost over time and details can slip away or become skewed. Mina, a high-school student who is clumsy, not well off, doesn't feel particularly beautiful or special, gets thrown into the world of fae and magic, death-defying stunts, and impossible monsters. Her only hope of surviving or protecting her family is to beat what no one before has ever been able to do, even the two Grimm brothers, and they were grown men, she's just a teenager. Among her first quests are "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood."
Good book recommend for females, teenage age, high school level. Deals with subjects of magic, fantasy, fitting in, communication, and understanding others differences.

UnEnchanted An Unfortunate Fairy Tale Book 1 eBook Chanda Hahn Reviews

It's a cute story, but I feel like the whole "chosen one" storyline is played out & kind of lazy. There's no real need for character development with such a storyline, plus YA novels keep having this hackneyed plot where the unassuming protagonist finds out they're "special." I thought the story would've been far better served if Mina had to gain a backbone & some self-esteem, which she so desperately needed to do in my opinion. Add to that a couple of more typical characteristics of YA novels the self-deprecating, painfully clumsy, self-sacrificing "plain jane" heroine, the potential love-triangle involving the rich, handsome, popular, golden boy & the tall, dark, & handsome rebel, & the one-and-only girlfriend (though I don't know how good of a friend she could've been when she was more than willing to post Mina's public humiliations on social media just so she could gain followers).

I did like Mina's little brother Charles & I feel like the author missed an opportunity there to flesh out his & Mina's relationship. The only reason Mina is willing to try as hard as she does to overcome the curse is so it doesn't end up passing to her little brother (Hunger Games anyone?), and yet there's not that much interaction between them or a very clear picture of his character. I get it, he's young & he's more of an ancillary character, but then why make him a driving force for Mina's actions?

Finally, I would've given this book 3 stars but I felt like there was one giant, insurmountable flaw to the story. Every time Mina's mom noticed the curse activating she would pack up her family & move, & go so far as to change their last name. Which makes me wonder what kind of magical curse can be evaded just by moving & changing your name? Made no sense to me at all. Does the curse use public records to find you? And if so, how? I mean it's a curse. It's intangible. I'm sure it's not going around doing Google searches & hiring private investigators to track Mina down. It really bugged me.
I love fairy tale retellings and tend to read quite a few of them so I was excited to begin this series. I downloaded the audiobook for my at work listen and found myself listening at the gym and in the car. I love that the book didn’t focus on the light-hearted fairy tales portrayed by Disney, but touched on the frightening aspects of Grimm’s original tales.

While the main character Mina can be annoying, overall she’s a great heroine, even if she is reluctant about it throughout the book. She’s brave and smart, while she isn’t described as gorgeous, she’s also not described as a lot of girls are as “plain.” She has an intense back story that adds to her dimension.

The other characters in the book, from Nan to Charlie are also well developed and help bring a bit of normalcy to Mina’s “cursed” story.

The plot is pretty fast moving, but lull’s in places. I would find myself zoned out and have to back up the story to hear what happened. The narrator does a great job with the voices and brings the characters, as well as the settings to life.

I really enjoyed the book and look forward to downloading the second one as soon as it is available. I’m looking forward to this twist on the traditional fairy tale, but hope that it’s ends with the traditional happy ending.
