FINAL DECISION: I love stories with tortured men and Malkom has been tortured throughout his life. He meets Carrow and his sweetness and innocence -- even while he is offering her ghoul heads as courtship tokens -- is lovely.

THE STORY: Carrow Graie aka Carrow the Incarcerated is a witch and a party girl whose magic originates from the good feelings of others. Her joy, however, hides a pained heart. Rejected by her parents, Carrow desperately wants to gain their attention. In the midst of her personal strife, Carrow is captured by a human group experimenting on members of the Lore. Carrow is offered freedom if she agrees to help capture a vemon (vampire demon) named Malkom Slaine. Malkom is a demon outcast who was unwillingly poisoned by vampire blood. He now lives alone desiring revenge. When Carrow appears, he realizes that he has finally found his mate. Malkom has killed everyone who has betrayed him. What will he do when he realizes that Carrow has as well?

OPINION: Both Carrow and Malkom have sad pasts. The tension and drama where Carrow betrays Malkom ripped my heart out. Malkom is immediately such a good and sweet man who hasn't had a life that has allowed him to show that side of himself. As he accepts Carrow as his own and courts her in his awkward and often mistaken way, he charms the reader and ultimately Carrow herself. These two seem likely doomed from the moment they meet. I also liked the caveman/city girl relationship these two have at first where they do not communicate well.

Cole once again perfectly melds the relationship between Carrow and Malkom with a plot that advances the overarching storyline of the series. While big things happen here, both old and new characters appear, the story never loses focus on the relationship of Carrow and Malkom and the question of whether a man who has been betrayed by everyone can love the woman who also betrays him.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book sets up the next round of books.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DEMON FROM THE DARK is the tenth book in the Immortals After Dark series. This book can be read as a standalone although new readersr should be aware that there is an overarching story of the series.

I blundered into the later story featuring Regin the Radiant first so there is a lot of overlap between books in this series. They all seem to be happening at the same time with a great deal of overlap in the characters. Malkom Slaine is a vemon A demon who was forced to drink vampire blood and is wrong. Carrow Graie is a kick butt witch who is taken by a human group who is trying to wipe out supernaturals. She is forced to go and bring Malkom back or have them kill her young niece who just saw her mom killed in front of her.

Carrow turns out to be Malkom's fated mate, but Malkom has led a horrible life and has had everyone he ever trusted turn on him. Can a witch and a Vemon make a life together and what will Carrow do to save her niece? Can Malkom ever get over her betrayal?

Carrow is the kind of friend who is always fun. She is always the life of the party and the frontline of any battle. She is the one who takes the younger witches out and sugars them up and leaves them for everyone at the coven as a practical joke. Watching her take responsibilty for her niece when she is overwhelmed with the task before her lets you know she is a woman of depth. Malkom is a good hero A little rough, a little clueless, but a good hero.
Malcolm, a demon who has led a life filled with torture and betrayal, was turned into a vemon and forced to kill his best friend by the vampire that captured them. After that he vowed revenge on the demon who betrayed them both. He holed up in a cave that controlled the water that the surrounding area needed, knowing that the betrayer would come to try to get the water back.
In the mean time, Carrow, party girl and witch extraordinaire is being held captive on an island where mortals are conducting experiments on members of the lore. Her niece who is seven, is brought in after her mother was killed in battle. Carrow immediately takes responsibility for the child and says she will adopt her. The people running the Order tell her if she travels to the demon realm and captures the vemon she and Ruby will be free.
When she gets there, through a portal, she has a week to get him and return to the portal.
When Malcolm smells her scent he recognized her as his fated mate.
The story takes their meeting and Carrow coming to care for Malcolm through the usual perals Ms. Cole provides for her H and h. I read the next book, about Regan the Radient before this by accident but I felt doing so contributed to this story, and I prefer this book over Regans. I loved the character development in the book and the way Carrow and Malcolm grew to care about each other and when Malcolm felt Carrow betrayed him he came to understand that she did it for Ruby.
My favorite of the IAD series. I really like the beauty and the beast vibe, between witch Carrow and "Demon!" (vemon) Malkom Slaine. I couldn't put this novel down. I honestly have a soft spot for characters that are written in such a way that they will go to any length to be with and protect their fated mate. Malkom wanted his mate so much that he was willing to give up his deep seated revenge to go to the ends of the realm with Carrow, wherever she went, he went, no questions asked. The over powerful vemon with a soft and vulnerable side, and a charming, funny and sexy witch to match who must make a choice.... And, what I really loved about "Demon From the Dark," Carrow and Malkom didn't hate on each other like a lot of other IAD series characters are written. There wasn't any turmoil of, "Is she/he the one?" Instead, add a circumstance that denotes betrayal but an honorable one at that... BAM! Love story. And a sexy one at that!
